The alkalinity of the water of any pool is one of the basic parameters to take into account and that directly affect the optimum pH levels of the water. If you do not have a well-adjusted alkalinity, it will be difficult to maintain water in optimal conditions (transparent and well disinfected).

That is why today's post will show you how you can adjust (lower or raise) the alkalinity of the water in any pool quickly and easily.

NOTE: you have more information in our post "What is the alkalinity of the water of a swimming pool".

ALKALINITY AND ITS EFFECTS

When we talk about total alkalinity, we refer to the amount of alkaline components (carbonates, bicarbonates and hydroxides) that we will find in the water of a swimming pool. These will act as regulating agents for any changes that occur in the pH of the water. This makes it of great importance to maintain good levels of them.

From Piscinarium we recommend that on a weekly basis you carry out water analysis of your pool to check its levels. Correct values will be those between 125-150 ppm (CO3Ca).

By way of information, the effects that will produce a badly adjusted alkalinity will be the following ones:

- High Alkalinity: high levels will produce high pH, difficulty adjusting pH and cloudy water.

- Low Alkalinity: low pH, corrosion, pH fluctuations, green water and eye irritation.

Once informed about its effects, here are the steps to follow in order to maintain good values.

REDUCING OR INCREASING ALKALINITY

For a correct adjustment of this value, the steps to follow in both situations are the following:

- Increase alkalinity: to increase the total alkalinity of 100 m3 of water by 10 ppm (as a guideline), add 1.8 kg of CTX-21 ALKA+ or AstralPool Alkalinity increaser. For different products see their recommended doses.

The necessary dose of this product should be poured dissolved in water and spread evenly over the surface of the pool.

- Lowering the alkalinity: lowering the alkalinity will be more complicated than increasing it. You will need to add the amount of CTX-10 pH- or Astral-10 pH Minor solid needed to convert the bicarbonate alkalinity (HCO3-) into carbon dioxide (CO2), which is removed as a gas. Generally speaking, lowering the pH will usually lower the alkalinity.
