Little by little we are saying goodbye to the swimming season in our pool. The daylight hours are getting shorter and the water temperature is getting lower and lower.
The cold months are approaching (autumn, winter and early spring), in which you will not be able to use the pool unless you have installed a heat pump (and some kind of cover) in the pool, so that you can maintain a warm and pleasant water temperature for swimming.
HIBERNATION OF THE POOL
If you do not have a heat pump, during the winter season and to avoid draining the pool water, you should pay attention to the process of hibernation (or winterization).
First of all, it is important to remember that during the coldest months of the year it is not advisable to empty the entire pool. Apart from being an expensive option, since at the beginning of the season we will have to fill it again, it is also very unsustainable. You should avoid wasting water whenever possible.
To do this, you can resort to hibernation; a process by which during the "winter" season you can keep the water in perfect condition and ready for re-use in the next bathing season.
Hibernating the pool has the following advantages:
- Clean appearance of the pool throughout the year.
- Considerable savings, both water and economic.
- The facilities are much better preserved.
- It makes it easier to prepare the pool for the new season.
- Maintains the health of the water.
- In case of frost, having water inside the pool avoids structural damage (cracks, breaks, ...).
STEPS TO FOLLOW
To proceed to hibernate the pool, you must wait until the water temperature is below 15º. Until this moment, you will have to continue treating the water of the pool as you usually do.
To hibernate the pool, you must follow these steps:
- Clean the pool properly (walls, bottom)
Clean the pre-filter of the pump and wash the filter
- Adjust the pH of the pool water to a value of 7.2-7.6. (Here we show you how to do it).
- To make a chlorination of shock to leave the water of l swimming pool perfectly disinfected. Then leave the filter running for about 6 hours.
- The next day, you should add the winterizing product and make sure it is well distributed throughout the pool.
Re-analyze the pH, and adjust it if necessary.
- In the middle of the wintering season, you should proceed with the second application of the winterizing product.
OTHER ASPECTS TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT
- To prevent the pool from getting excessively dirty and full of leaves, it is advisable to use a cover or tarp during hibernation.
- If you have an automatic pool cleaner, remember to remove it from the water, dry it and store it properly.
- If you have an automatic treatment or dosing system (salt chlorinator, pH regulator, ...) you should turn it off.
- Check the water level from time to time to avoid overflows caused by rain or to avoid an excessive drop in the water level.
