For that reason in today's post we explain you what the shock chlorination consists of, what you will obtain with it and how you should realize it.
SHOCK CHLORINATION
The purpose of this treatment is to add a larger amount of chlorine (or other disinfectant product) than usual to quickly disinfect the pool water and allow it to recover a good condition.
The amount to be poured will depend on the size of the pool (water volume), but it will be much higher than the amount normally used for simple maintenance.
WHEN AND HOW TO PERFORM SHOCK CHLORINATION
The two cases in which you may need to perform this type of treatment are the following:
- Due to climatological circumstances, storms, chlorine shortage, ... that cause an important deterioration of the pool water.
- To prepare the pool water for the beginning of the season, whether or not you have winterized your pool.
NOTE: if you are not in one of these two situations, it is best not to perform any type of shock chlorination so as not to increase the chlorine levels that could cause eye peaks and/or skin irritation.
Also, the best time to perform such chlorination is always at the end of the day. Keep in mind that chlorine is a very volatile chemical and in this way you will avoid that it evaporates quickly and its disinfectant power is greater.
To correctly perform the shock chlorination, the steps to follow are listed below:
- Perform a cleaning of the pool surface and bottom to remove any dirt and debris that may be present (leaves, dust, ...).
- Adjust the pH of the water to optimum values (7.2 - 7.6). If necessary you will have to adjust it by means of pH increaser or pH reducer. Do not forget that if the pH is not correctly adjusted, the chlorine will not work well and the disinfection will not be carried out correctly.
- Add granulated or powdered chlorine in a bucket of water, stir it so that it is completely dissolved and pour it around the perimeter of the pool. If at the end there is chemical product left in the bucket, add more water, stir it and pour it into the pool water. The amount of chlorine needed to perform a chlorine chlorination is usually 10-15 grams per m3 of pool water (see product label for exact amount).
- Leave the filtration equipment in recirculation for 2-3 hours.
