One of the parameters to which we must pay attention when carrying out the maintenance of the water of the swimming pool and to which in the majority of occasions it is not paid attention, is the alkalinity.

The importance of having a well adjusted alkalinity is important, because otherwise you will not get the pool water in optimal conditions of transparency and disinfection.

ALKALINITY OF WATER

Technically, the total alkalinity will indicate the amount of alkaline components (carbonates, bicarbonates and hydroxides) dissolved in the pool water.

This alkalinity is basic for you to get the pH of your pool water well controlled. Otherwise, you will not be able to keep the pH stable, causing constant oscillations in pH values (high and low). And these imbalances cause problems of turbidity in the water, corrosion, eye irritation, green color of the water, ..

To avoid all this, we recommend that you regularly (weekly) measure the alkalinity of the water and check that it is between 125-150 ppm.

ALKALINITY MEASUREMENT AND ADJUSTMENT

To measure the total alkalinity of the pool water, you can use simple analytical strips (measurement of 4 or 7 parameters) that will allow you to find out its value easily and quickly. You can also measure with a variety of digital meters or even photometers.

Once analyzed, remember that its value should be between 125-150 ppm. And if the value is out of adjustment, the following should be done:

- Total alkalinity lower than 125 ppm: to avoid irritation of the bather's skin, red eyes, excessive consumption of disinfectant, ... you will have to increase the alkalinity value. To do this, you will need to add Alkalinity Increaser CTX -21 Alka+ or AstralPool Alkalinity Increaser. You will need to add the required dose to the pool water and spread it evenly over the surface of the pool.

- Alkalinity higher than 150 ppm: its correction process is more complicated. You will have to add the amount of pH Reducer necessary to convert the bicarbonated alkalinity into carbon dioxide, in order to eliminate it in the form of gas.
